To prevent misuse and maintain privacy policies, Meta-owned WhatsApp closed over 8.4 million accounts in India in August. This information was reported by Indian media outlet Mint on Tuesday. According to WhatsApp’s latest transparency report, 8.458 million Indian accounts were closed in August 2024.
The report was published in compliance with the 2021 Indian Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, according to Mint.
The report states that this ban was primarily due to WhatsApp’s proactive detection mechanisms. Among these, 1.661 million accounts were closed even before any user complaints were filed.
The August report also mentioned that WhatsApp received 10,707 user complaints. These complaints were sent to the India Grievance Officer via email and mail, requesting account closures.
