Arrest warrant issued against Russell and Shamima of Evaly

The court framed charges against managing director (MD) Mohammad Russell and chairman Shamima Nasreen of e-commerce platform Evely in a case of embezzlement. As they did not appear in court, the judge issued an arrest warrant. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arfatul Rakib gave this order on Monday (October 28).
According to the complaint of the case, the customer Tahsanul Islam Al Amin paid Tk 2 lakh 20 thousand 985 for the purchase of two motorcycles, a smart phone and various goods from March 27, 2021 to June 5 of the same year. Goods were not supplied to the plaintiff against this amount. Later, when Evaly contacted the authorities for a partial refund, a check of Tk 180,000 was given to him. However, the plaintiff could not withdraw any money from the concerned bank with that check. When last contacted on January 18 to get the money back, the authorities refused to give it. In this incident, on January 25, Tahsanul Islam Al Amin filed a case in court as a plaintiff.
The e-commerce platform allegedly failed to deliver products worth hundreds of crores of rupees to its customers and failed to pay vendors. Customers filed several cases regarding this.
On September 16, 2021, RAB arrested Russell and Nasreen from Mohammadpur in a case filed by a customer at Gulshan police station. Later, five more cases of money embezzlement were filed against the couple in Dhanmondi police station and court.
Later on December 19 last year, Russell and Nasreen were released on bail on April 6, 2022 from Kashimpur jail.
