ABC News has agreed to pay one and a half million dollars in damages to settle a defamation lawsuit filed by the newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump.

Local time on Saturday (December 14) ABC News announced the decision, BBC reported in a report.

In an ABC News interview last March with South Carolina lawmaker Nancy Mays, debate host George Stephanopoulos called Trump a rapist more than ten times. Trump then filed a defamation suit against ABC News and the host of the show.

ABC News will issue a formal apology for Stephanopoulos’ remarks as a condition of the settlement, according to the BBC.

The organization will provide $150 million to establish a ‘Presidential Foundation and Museum’ for Trump. In addition, they will pay $1 million for Trump’s legal expenses.

Under the terms of the settlement, ABC News will add an editor’s note below its report published online on March 10 of this year.

That note will read: ABC News and George Stephanopoulos President Donald J. Rep. Nancy Masse regrets comments she made about Trump in an interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s ‘This Week’ on March 10, 2024 about Trump.

An ABC News spokeswoman said in a statement that the company is “pleased that both parties have settled the case in accordance with the terms filed in court.”
